Chemical Cleaning is a pre-commissioning procedure that generally involves cleaning plant equipment using a formulated chemistry to remove mill scale from water tubes. It is also applied to piping and vessels that require mill scale removal. This process minimizes tube failures during start-up, improves heat transfer, and enhances the efficiency of plant equipment during operation.

A typical chemical cleaning involves:

• Filling the equipment with high-quality water.


• Raising the water temperature.


• Adding an emulsifier to remove oils and light greases.


• Adding an inhibitor to prevent steel from being attacked by the acid chosen.


• Adding a weak chelating acid to dissolve and place in suspension any mill scale and iron to be removed.


• A neutralizing phase.


• Passivating the cleaned metal with a passivating agent.

The passivating agent places a vapor barrier on the steel to help prevent flash rust during restoration. After the process, the boiler/HRSG is drained, rinsed, and ready to be placed into operation.
