Gas Turbine Air Control

Air control is becoming increasingly crucial to meet emission requirements and enhance the operational performance of gas turbines (GTs). It plays a significant role in improving starting reliability and load flexibility while meeting stringent emission control standards.


Variable Guide Vane (VGV) or Variable Inlet Guide Vane (VIGV) control is essential, with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) incorporating multiple independent drives. Air bleed for compressor control and anti-icing is also vital.


OVERVIEW OF AIR CONTROLS:


In the past decade, HEINZMANN has supplied hundreds of electric guide vane servo systems to a gas turbine OEM in Europe for machines ranging from 4 to 20 MW shaft power. Leveraging its high-performance electric actuation technology, HEINZMANN now offers electric bleed air control valves for the same range of turbines.


VGV-L Linear Guide Vane Actuator:



  • A position servo assembly comprising a digital electronic controller, rotary servo motor, and rotary-to-linear gearbox.

  • Typically mounted in trunnions and connected by a spherical jointed coupling to a mechanism that transfers linear motion to rotate several stages of variable inlet stator blades on an axial compressor.


VGV-R Rotary Guide Vane Actuator:



  • This assembly consists of a digital electronic controller, rotary servo motor, and rotary gearbox.

  • Multiple rotary VGV actuators are being employed to meet the growing demand for increased position accuracy and speed.

  • Two or three actuators moving fewer VGVs ensure higher accuracy and speed.

  • Various mounting options are available, customized by the customer for specific applications.
